This day, 14 May, in 1984, the Chinese women’s badminton team stole their country’s first ever victory in the Uber Cup. Beating England 5-0 in the final, the Chinese have gone on to all but completely dominate the Uber Cup, winning 15 out of the 20 competitions held since. The Uber Cup is named after Betty Uber, the former British women’s badminton player, who had the idea for the competition in 1950.
