A woman in her forties in Changshu fell critically ill after eating crabs which she stored in the refrigerator two weeks before consumption.

Before the National Day holiday, Ms Li received 10 beautifully packaged hairy crabs, an autumn time delicacy in Eastern China, as a gift from her friend. Each of the live crabs weighing around 0.25 kg were kept in the woman’s refrigerator.

On October 2nd, nearly 2 weeks later, Ms Li felt extremely hungry so she decided to cook the rest two crabs, one of which was dead. Unfortunately for Ms. Li’s, deceased crabs happen to be infested with a toxin that is extremely dangerous if consumed and can lead to what is known as “seafood poisoning”.

Shortly following her feast, Ms Li begun to feel ill. The pain gradually got worse, prompting Ms Li to, with a struggle, call her the relatives and friends for help. Her friends soon arrived and broke the windows of her house to get into her room.

Following the heroic rescue, Ms. Li was sent to hospital where fortunately she was treated for severe food poisoning caused by the hairy crab that she could not bear to throw away. She is now recovering well.
