The incidence of diabetes has risen sharply in China over the past 10 years, and the number of diabetics in Jiangsu has tripled with 8 percent of residents suffering from the disease, reporters learned from a media promotion activity calling for more attention to diabetes.

Data of 2010 monitoring the health condition of Jiangsu residents shows that people who died of chronics disease accounted for over 70 percent of the total death toll, and the ratio even reaches 85 percent in urban areas. The data also shows that diabetes, (6.5 percent of population) and hypertension (38.6 percent of population) are two major chronic diseases causing the death of Jiangsu residents. The statistical data of 2013 indicates that only 43.5 percent of diabetics in Jiangsu were aware of their disease, 36.2 percent had received medical treatment, and only 16.4 percent had their blood glucose controlled.
