This day, 4 March, in 1983, when Deng Xiaoping met with a delegation of the US House of Representatives visiting China, he explained China’s policy on the Taiwan issue to US House Speaker Tip O’Neill, and made it clear, saying, “We no longer have the term ‘to liberate Taiwan’, and as long as Taiwan returns to the motherland, we will respect the reality there and the current system”.
