As the Double Ninth Day, a traditional festival for elders, is approaching, Finance Department of and Department of Civil Affairs of Jiangsu Province jointly allocated a “Respecting the Elders Fund” of 14.44 million yuan (US$2.36 million) to elders of 100 years old or above.   

According to the latest statistics, Jiangsu has 4,277 elders aged 100 or above with Nantong, Xuzhou and Yancheng reporting the most centenarians. The oldest person in Jiangsu province is a woman surnamed Ye-Xing who is 116 years old.   

From 2011, Jiangsu started granting “Respecting the Elders Fund”, at least 1.5 billion yuan (US$0.25 billion) annually, to more than 2 million elders at 80 or above who are registered Jiangsu residents. The “Respecting the Elders Fund” for centenarian is no less than 300 yuan (about US$49) per month.
