The 96333 lift emergency-response center formally started operation on Apr 8. A total of 31,000 passenger lifts in Nanjing own their sole “identification codes”. When people in a lift dial 96333 in case of emergency, they can be quickly positioned by the GPS system.

It takes 12.97 minutes on average for rescue personnel to arrive at the scene after the system receives the phone calls since the start of its trial operation half a year ago, 17 minutes faster than the 30 minutes the national standard requires.

The working staff demonstrated the rescue procedure based on the 96333 system. When several passengers are trapped in a lift, they dial the 96333 hotline and tell the dispatcher that “We are trapped in the lift with the lift code of 000252.” The 6-digit code is affixed to the lower position of the 96333 mark in a lift, which can be positioned by the GPS system according to the sole ID code for each lift. The lift emergency-response center can quickly position the malfunctioning lift by the GPS system with the distance deviation between 3 and 5 meters, eliminating errors caused by people’s unclear oral expression. Dispatchers at the 96333 lift emergency-response center are on duty 24 hours to offer free rescue service, according to the news release.
