Migrant workers’ wage increase outpaces urban counterparts for 3rd consecutive year

According to data issued by the Statistics Bureau of Jiangsu Province on February 4, increase of income made by rural migrant workers surpasses that of urban residents in Jiangsu Province for three years in a row in 2012.

In 2012, net average income of rural residents in the whole province reached 12,202 yuan (US$1,957.64). Wage increase of rural residents is faster than urban residents by percent. The ratio of income between rural residents and urban residents fall from 2.44:1 in last year to 2.43:1 in this year.

With regard to income sources, the increase of pay level for technical jobs and well-planned labor transfer is the major driving force behind wage growth. For rural residents, income per capita amounts to 6,735 yuan (US$1,081.64), an year-on-year increase of 12.7 percent. The trend of migrant workers going back hometown for work is increasingly evident. Rural household net income per capita of the whole province stands at 4,181 yuan (US$671.47), a year-on-year rise of 10.6 percent, of which income per capita of primary industry is 2,372 yuan (US$380.94), and income per capita of secondary and tertiary industry is 1,810 yuan (US$290.69), a year-on-year growth of 9.9 percent and 11.5 percent respectively.

  At the same time, benefit-the-public policy continues to heat up, driving a significant growth in transfer income. Rural residents’ average transfer income in 2012 is 984 yuan (US$158.03), a increase of 22.9 percent. Property income of rural resident reached 562 yuan (US$90.26), a year-on-year growth of 18 percent.
