With Beijing under a partial lockdown, Nanjing is trying to keep its Covid-19 fatality record blemish free by taking imported seafood off the market and tracking down travellers who arrived from Beijing since 31 May.

Huge numbers of people travel between the northern and southern capitals of China on daily basis. Tracking down the movements of all who have arrived in Nanjing from Beijing since the end of last month is an enormous undertaking.

In particular, authorities are urging those who have visited the Beijing Xinfadi Wholesale Market or the Beijing-Shenzhen Seafood Market in the past two weeks, or those in contact with people who have, to take the initiative and contact their local residential community or district epidemic prevention and control headquarters.

In addition, organisers of meetings and events taking place in the next few weeks are at present being contacted; the onus now on them to provide to local authorities the health code status of each and every attendee.

With the new cluster of infections traced to a cutting board used for seafood in the Beijing market, so Nanjing has also turned its emergency attention to the city’s food supply.

From 13 to 15 June, the Market Supervision Bureau of Nanjing’s 11 districts, plus Jiangbei New Area and Nanjing Development Zone, inspected 3,503 units involved in food production. A total of 396 were found to be working with imported seafood, of which 219 deal in imported salmon, reports PSA Nanjing (南京发布).

In addition, relevant departments have conducted emergency sampling of produce in three agricultural wholesale markets in Liuhe, Qinhuai and Xuanwu districts. While results so far have all been negative, going forward, employees therein are required to collect pharyngeal and anal swabs, as well as blood specimens from aquatic and meat produce. Anal swabs are to be tested for the coronavirus nucleic acid, while blood samples shall be tested for coronavirus-specific serum antibodies IgM and IgG.

Nanjing also has taken the precautionary step of taking all imported seafood off the city’s shopping market shelves, after tests in Beijing revealed the infected seafood’s genome sequencing to be similar to the strain in that of its European cousin.

Despite the implication, authorities are not yet certain as to its true origins.

The recent new outbreak in China’s capital has prompted a military-like response from the Beijing government. A total of 11 residential communities in the vicinity of the two affected markets have been placed on complete lockdown, reports CNN. Residents are not permitted to leave their compound for any reason. Food and other necessities are being delivered.

The Beijing Xinfadi Wholesale Market supplies more than 80 percent of the fresh produce consumed by Beijing. It has now been shut down.
