  • Cabs to Start Receiving Subsidy; But 1 RMB Fuel Charge Will Not Go Away

Anyone who lives in Nanjing undoubtedly takes cabs, and anyone who has lived in Nanjing for more than two years has seen the price of cabs slowly but steadily rise. The first step is always a 1 RMB increase in order to cover gas costs, the last of which was implemented in 2009. As of now, a cab costs at least 9 RMB, plus 1 RMB needed for the extra fee. However, a subsidy will be introduced on 7 June to assist the cab business, but that pesky extra fee will not go away.

If prices of cabs will not fall, then what exactly is a subsidy for? Nanjing

  • A New 1912 is Coming to Nanjing

Yes, you did read that right. In what may be the biggest Nanjing party news this year, it has been announced that the city will soon be host to not one, but two 1912’s. However, the new establishment will not be close to the existing one. In fact, it will not even be situated in the city center, and instead will be located next to Jiangning District’s Baijia Lake. By Christmas of this year, the new bar street should be fully operational.

The new 1912 will be over 30,000 square meters, and contain the usual assortment of bars, high end restaurants, salons, spas, and other similar establishments. However, many things will be changed over the two locations. While the existing 1912 is a popular hangout for younger Nanjingers and a more club oriented crowd, Baijia Lake 1912 will try to focus more on relaxation. Instead of a district of predominantly clubs, a focus will be more on salon style bars.

The entire area will be situated directly on the side of Baijia Lake. Eighty businesses are already investing money, and by the end of this year, the party should start in Jiangning. Well, a more modest party, anyway.

On a recent visit to the Labor Market at An De Men, a reporter was given a chance to see what life is like for the many migrant workers who come to Nanjing in search of work. • For Some, Spring Festival is Perfect Time for Cosmetic Surgery

The Spring Festival Holiday is almost over, and this means that most people are going back to work within the next few days. What may be surprising is just how some people chose to spend their holiday. Instead of going back to their hometowns or spending time with family, a growing number of people are using the long break to get plastic surgery, so that they are fully recovered and beautified by the time they get back to the office or school.

One person who got this surgery over the break was second year graduate student Li Hui. • With Holiday Travel Rush Underway, Train Ticket Bookings Now Available over the Phone and Online

Chinese New Year is less than two weeks away, and as the holiday approaches millions of people will travel back to their hometowns to see their families. This is potentially bad news for expats who want to get out of Nanjing and do some traveling during the break, as ticket lines at the train stations are so long that they go out the door. An easier solution may now be available, as train tickets can now be booked by phone and over the internet. However, limitations do apply.

At the Nanjing Train Station, long lines leave many Chinese people feeling that it will be impossible to get home to see their families, and many expats and foreign students feeling that they will be stuck in Nanjing during the Chinese New Year break. Buying tickets to many parts of Central and Western China is difficult, in particular Chengdu, Chongqing, Yingchuan, Lanzhou, and Urumqi. One man, identified as Xiao Liu, said he was in line for three days waiting to get tickets back to his native Chengdu, in Sichuan province.
