WWII bullets discovered at Nanjing invasion site
Hundreds of bullets suspected of being used by Chinese soldiers in the fight against Japanese invaders during World War II have been discovered in the east China city of Nanjing.
Workers found more than 450 machine-gun bullets, cartridge cases, clips and bullet heads at a construction site outside the Memorial Hall of the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre on Friday, said Zong Ren, deputy head of the Jianye district government, where the hall is located.
Preliminary studies show that the bullets were for Soviet Union-made firearms used by Chinese soldiers during the war, Zhu Chengshan, curator of the memorial hall, told Xinhua on Saturday.
The discovery is of great importance, said Zhu.
Based on the bullets found, historical records and terrain nearby the hall, Zhu said the discovery site might have been a 1.5 meter deep trench where soldiers fought. Further research will be carried out on the bullets.
The battle of defending Nanjing, the then capital of China, started on Dec. 1, 1937. After days of fighting, Japanese troops occupied the city on Dec. 13 and massacred over 300,000 Chinese.
One third of houses in the city were burned down and more than 20,000 women were raped. According to Zhu, excavation at the site is continuing and the area has been cordoned off. More bullets are expected to be recovered.

College students invent voice-controlled bin
Five students of Mechanical Engineering Department of Southeast University Chengxian College have invented a voice-control mobile garbage can which not only is suitable for “lazybones” and “indoorsy people”, but also can offer considerate services to people having difficulty in moving.
When submitting their innovative projects in 2013, Zhou Lei and other four students found most of the smart garbage cans in the market can only automatically open and close the cover, and they decided to upgrade such garbage cans.
“We use the voice recognition module so that the garbage cans can ‘understand the human languages’,” said Zhou.
A signal receiver is mounted on the garbage can, so that the can is able to receive signals within 100 meters and act according to instructions, said Zhou Lei. Also mounted on the garbage can is an ultrasonic device which can help the can avoid obstacles in movement.
The experiment cost of such garbage can is about 2,000 yuan ($320). After mass production, the price may drop to about 200 yuan ($32) which is affordable for ordinary people.

Petite Abeille
The self-proclaimed “French import store” boasts a couple of interesting products venturing off the well-trodden path of Pepperidge Farm cookies and Barilla pasta sauces. A comparatively large range of French biscuits, pains grilles, Harrogate Spring water, and Frankfurter sausages are examples of products you cannot find so easily, even in the highly internationalised environment that is Nanjing.

Cafe Inn
Cafe Inn is another of an army of Starbucks-like coffee houses that invite you to linger while reading a book, enjoying an unpronouncably complicated beverage and taking a respite from being a fast-paced urbanite. What makes this place stand out from the endless franchises to be found across Nanjing is its wonderfully open archtiectural layout. While many of the large coffee houses resemble more bunkers with a chronic lack of natural light and/or air, Cafe Inn is manned with, for Chinese standards, unconventionally large windows from top to bottom. Outside there is also a small seating area for sunny days. Pricewise very similar to any other Korean or American coffee chain, Cafe Inn convinces through its truly relaxing surrounding.

Zoo Coffee
Zoo Coffee stands out of the sea of coffee places shooting out of the ground for two reasons. For one, it is home-grown as opposed to its many Korean-born competitors. Secondly, and more importantly, it breaks with the formulaic modern coffee house in one majorly funky way; as the name suggests this place combines coffee culture and animals. Populated by plushy pandas and painted quadrupeds, this place is definitely something else. Enjoy a wide range of delicious drinks, from coffees to fruity shakes, and an array of basic Western dishes including tomato and mozzarella salad. For carnivores there are even Franfurter sausages on the breakfast menu. It’s feeding time!
