  • Jack’s Place Italian restaurant

Humble yet honest, Jack’s Place has tellingly been around Nanjing in various locations since 1995, serving up Italian favourites popular with expats and locals alike. Recommended by Lonely Planet, as the business card and signs outside proudly announce, Jack’s Place is well known for an atmosphere that is cozy and friendly. Freshly opened in December 2012, in the university town of Xianlin and literally around the corner from the expat enclave that is Yadong Plaza, the latest incarantion of Jack’s Place is a whopping 303 square metres. Set menus begin at ¥109 for a four course meal that includes a very satisfying local steak. Soups are another strength of Jack’s Place but their standout, signature dishes continue to be a creative pasta collection.

Another location can be found in Xinjiekou, at 35 Wangfu Da Jie. Tel: 84206485

  • Les 5 Sens

Les 5 Sens was one of the first French restaurants to open up in Nanjing, and has a wide variety of cuisine. Surprisingly, meals here are not that expensive. A set menu is available for 78 RMB, and many other dishes on the menu cost less than 50 RMB each. Dishes which are served here include goose liver, fillet of lamb, duck breast with apple, and tiramisu. There are also sandwhiches and pizza on the menu. Inside, the setting is comfortable and relaxed, with small tables and sofas. Les 5 Lens is a good place to go for a quiet French dinner.

  • Tairyo Japanese Restaurant

This is a great place to indulge yourself with a bunch of friends – mainly for the all you can eat and drink offer. Dish after dish, beer after beer and jug of sake is available to those who want it. The sushi is great, handrolls okay, and the grilled salmon amazing. It all comes out tapas-like, there’s no main dishes on the menu as such. There’s private rooms (shoes off, of course) that can comfortably hold about sixteen people over two tables.

There are two other branches, on in 1912 and another close to the main gate of Xuanwu Lake.

One thing to keep in mind is that when many dishes ordered at the same time, service can become slow.

  • Masala Kitchen

Carefully laid out Indian décor without being kitsch makes this restaurant a very pleasant place in which to sit and relax. Offers authentic Indian food created by an Indian chef with over 20 years’ experience such as dishes from the traditional charcoal Tandoor and all of the old favourites as well as some dishes that are specialities of his hometown Hyderabad.

  • Himalaya Indian and Nepalese restaurant

Tucked away in the back of a courtyard, it’s a bit hard to find at first, but once you’ve found it, it offers all the Indian and Nepalese culinary delights you’d expect to find, at around the price you’d expect. These include curries around 38 to 40 yuan for vegetarian and basic curries, to around 60 yuan for seafood ones. There’s naan for around 12 yuan, as well as lassi. There’s also a formidable range of imported beers, giving enough choice of liquid yeast products to satisfy just about any taste.

I’m sure there’s local opinions on whether Himalaya or

  • Secco

    Secco

The original Secco near the entrance of Xuan Wu lake beside the old city walls was an amazing location. In its reincarnation, Secco is back in a new location sited in a former warehouse. A large bar occupies a considerable proportion of the somewhat cavernous, neon-lit interior.

  • Ciao Italia

    Ciao Italia

There is also an extensive menu of other sorts of Italian dishes including pastas, but the pizzas are what makes this place famous. Delivery also available.
